Most patients don't realize it, but even conditions as mundane as hearing loss have a genetic basis - by some estimates, up to half of all patients suffering from hearing loss owe their conditions to genetics rather than to environmental factors. Even more surprising to the average patient, genetic testing is now used to diagnose the causes of hearing loss.</div>

Genetic disease can present itself in three different forms -chromosomal, monogenic, and complex. If large segments of one or more chromosomes occur in only one copy, or in more than the expected two copies, the condition is called a chromosomal disorder. The most well-known example of this is Down syndrome. Single-gene (monogenic) disorders are those that are caused by a mutation in a single gene, and most cases of hearing loss fall into this category. Complex genetic disorders (such as cleft palate), are caused by the interaction of several genes, the environment, and random factors.</div>

Genetic testing for hearing disorders is relatively straightforward, although it does present possible ethical questions (such as whether the patient or his family members wish to receive information about their likely susceptibility to various diseases and illnesses). DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) have two properties that make testing easy. One is that DNA makes copies of itself easily, and the other is that copies stick to each other. For instance, if you start with a double strand of DNA and heat it up, the two strands will come apart into a mixture of single-stranded nucleic acid strands. You can then cool the mixture down and the complementary strands will stick back together again. This allows a type of process called polymearase chain reaction (PCR) to work - it's a method used to amplify targeted sequences of DNA. Although it involves more steps than those described here, the DNA polymearase chain is heated and cooled many times until the DNA fragment has been duplicated enough to use in testing - it's the manufactured DNA that is actually used in testing. Almost every modern genetic test in use today begins with the process of PCR.</div>

To put this technology to work in a clinical setting, an otolaryngologist usually begins by testing the patient's DNA for known mutations. However, if nothing shows up after testing for previously identified mutations in humans, further testing for unknown mutations is also possible. Some mutations are so rare they have only been documented in one family or one patient! At this time, genetic technologies are used almost exclusively as a diagnostic tool - and most of the time the focus remains on disorders caused by major genes. If a patient is discovered to have a mutation responsible for causing hearing loss, head or neck deformities, etc., then there is no further need for clinical testing to determine the cause. The Grapefruit diet is not a diet for life. It is a short time diet; it only lasts 2 1/2 months. It is a diet for rapid weight loss and fast weight loss diets are always popular. We have seen popular diets come and go and this dieting program is no exception; we can call it a fad diet. It is also a weight loss diet for real heavy weighters who need to lose lots of pounds.<br />

If you follow this diet exactly you should be able to lose 52 pounds during this two and a half month's dieting period. To sustain the weight loss however, you need to change to a long term diet. The usefulness of this diet is to motivate people who are severely overweight towards a flying dieting start. If you look at the diet this way, it might be useful for you.<br />

General Guidelines<br />

<li>During this diet you should reduce your coffee consumption, it slows down the burning process. Only one cup a day</li>

So what’s the fall away message from all of this? Can we do anything? Well as individuals it’s wise to go through the same sanitary practices as we might during flu season. We must be aware if our pigs catch flu during the season so that we put them instantly in a quarantine area that no other individual will take care of your pigs without protective suits. And traveling to places which have reported Swine Flu cases probably isn’t a great idea. <br />

There are people as you observe in different agencies and they have spent their whole lives preparing for just these kinds of epidemics and they are currently working very hard to provide the public with the best information and advice about the Swine Flu.<br />

The worldwide flu news headlines on the outbreak of the new virus – formerly known as swine influenza - are enough to scare a small child.<br />
<br />
Throw in the World Health Organization's elevating the worldwide pandemic alert level to 5 last week - just one step below full pandemic – and it’s enough to understandably send frightened grown-ups into defensive action mode.<br />
<br />
<br />
But what exactly is it that we at home can do to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus?<br />
<br />
There's No Place Like Home<br />
<br />
President Felipe Calderon of Mexico put it best in his first televised address this week since the outbreak started: “There is no safer place than your own home to avoid being infected with the flu virus,” Calderon said.<br />
<br />
And once we’re there, the better we know how to keep a virus from taking root or spreading in our home, the safer our home and the family members inside will be.<br />
<br />
This is especially important for parents, because as we know, the flu hits younger children harder because they haven’t built up many immunities. Worse, the flu vaccine is in short supply in many places and babies can’t take it, anyway.<br />
<br />
It helps to remember the reason why we usually get colds and flu this time of year. Not because of the weather - but because we're all cooped up with each other (and each other's germs) indoors.<br />
<br />
Rhinoviruses can survive up to three hours on skin and inanimate objects. That means when little Johnny hacks away without covering his mouth at preschool, your little Annie has ample opportunity to come in contact with his germs. And to bring them home alive.<br />
<br />
According to the Centers for Disease Control, spread of the swine influenza A H1N1 virus is thought to occur the same way: mainly from person to person through the coughing or sneezing of people with influenza.<br />
<br />
Additionally, sometimes people may become infected by touching something with viruses on it and then touching his nose or mouth.<br />
So What's a Mom to Do?<br />
While we can’t do much about the worldwide spread of influenza, there are 10 simple but effective things we can do inside our home:<br />
<br />
1 Wash Your Hands. And make your kids wash their hands. A lot. (Tell them they can finally play in water.) Avoid the anti-bacterial soaps that may actually cause more viruses in the long run by making germs resistant. Unless kids' hands are visibly dirty, encourage them to use the alcohol-based cleansers that clean without water. These cleansers kill germs by dehydration. You can buy small bottles and pack them in your kids' backpacks for use at school. If they need soap and water, they must scrub vigorously for at least 30 seconds to kill germs. (Tell Annie to wash while she sings the Alphabet Song. That should do it.) The more you wash, the safer you are.<br />
<br />
2 Teach kids to sneeze or cough into a tissue and then throw the tissue away. And then wash their hands again!<br />
<br />
3 Get a Flu Shot. If flu shots are available, make sure everyone in your family who is old enough gets one.<br />
<br />
4 Don’t Share. Tell you kids not to drink after other kids or share food. And warn your daughters not to share lip-gloss.<br />
<br />
5 Disinfect Your Home. What's the most germ-laden room of your house? Nope, it's not the bathroom. It's the kitchen -- especially the sink area. And the worst germ-breeding object in your house? The kitchen sponge or dishrag. The moistness in sponges creates an ideal growing environment for these nasty little creatures. Disinfect sponges periodically by wetting them and popping them into the microwave for two minutes; replace them at least once a week. Change dishrags daily.<br />
<br />
6 Clean surfaces that may harbor germs with a good virus-killing disinfectant, such as Clorox or Lysol. Regularly clean doorknobs, faucets, countertops, keyboards, telephone receivers and any other frequently touched surface.<br />
<br />
7 Take Care of yourself. Cold germs are around all the time. So why aren’t we sick all the time? Usually, healthy, well-nourished, well-rested people can fend off many germs. And if you do get sick, good health usually helps you recover faster. So make sure your family gets at least eight hours of sleep, eats healthy meals (lots of fruit and vegetables) and exercises daily. All the good stuff you should be doing, anyway!<br />
<br />
8 Keep the Flu at Home. If you or your child is running a temperature, stay home! Do not go out and infect others. And if you have younger kids, think twice before sending them to indoor amusement parks where toddlers may have been drooling over plastic balls, etc. And avoid people who have been sick. Adults are contagious up to seven days after experiencing symptoms. And kids are contagious longer than that. Parents may want to consider talking to his or her employer about working from home.<br />
<br />
9 If you do get the flu, start antiviral prescription medications such as oseltamivir or zanamivir right away. If you take these drugs within the first 48 hours of symptoms, they can lessen the severity. Otherwise, all you can do is drink a lot of liquids and try to sleep through it. If your symptoms are severe – and particularly if you have difficulty breathing – see a doctor.<br />
<br />
10 Finally, call a family meeting to discuss your family’s plans for a pandemic. Who will care for the kids if mom and dad are both sick? Be sure to stock up on cleaning supplies, such as soap and alcohol-based hand wash, fever reducers, lots of water or other hydrating fluids, and plenty of tissues.<br />

What makes swine flu so dangerous is that like all influenza viruses it undergoes the process of antigenic drift. This is when spot mutations occur on the genetic material that causes slight changes in the physical make-up of the virus. <br />
<br />
These slight changes are what frustrate scientist’s attempts to create the ultimate vaccination for influenza. Due to constant changes to the protein particles of the outer coats of viruses (which the immune system is targeted for during vaccination) new vaccines are always needed to combat ever new versions of the viruses.<br />
<br />
Swine flu is an example of such a change. But what are these changes and what parts of the virus causes the damage that destroys normal healthy cells?<br />
The H1N1 designation of the swine flu virus gives us a clue to the inner workings of the virus. It represents the major functional proteins on its surface.<br />
<br />
The ‘H’ stands for hemagglutinin which is a protein that binds the swine flu virus to the cell and injects its content into it.<br />
The ‘N’ stands for neuraminidase which possesses a number of specialized enzymes that causes the infected cells to release the newly formed viruses.<br />
<br />
All these aspects of swine flu make it potentially very dangerous. Even though the form that is currently spreading is relatively mild it could still change into a virulent strain in the next few months before winter arrives. The fact that it’s also a new disease means that there is no current vaccine for swine flu. So if it becomes more deadly, we will have no protection against it except for those provided by generic anti-viral drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza. <br />
<br />
Tamiflu works by blocking the action of neuroamindase, obstructing the flu virus’s ability to spread from one cell to the other. But it is only effective as a treatment if it is used in the first few days during the onset of swine flu. The problem with anti-viral drugs is that it is often very difficult to diagnose the onset of swine flu. By the time the disease is identified it’s often too late to use the drugs. This is one of the reasons the effectiveness of anti-virals drugs has been called into question.<br />
<br />
So we are currently exposed to the full potential of swine flu. We know the devastation that influenza viruses can cause, the Spanish flu pandemic infected more than one third of the world’s population and killed more than 50 million people. <br />
<br />
We have no choice but to be vigilant to the spread of swine flu. Millions will undoubtedly catch the disease and many more will die from it. All we can do is hope that it doesn’t become more virulent and cause too much death. In its current mild form we can contain it and can control the worse of its symptoms through the use of anti-viral drugs. But if it changes we could be in trouble. Even the vaccines that are currently been developed might not be as effective if the change is marked. What we have to remember is that it is dangerous because it is so changeable and in light of this we have no choice but to treat it with extreme caution.<br />

There are chronic muscular, neurological, and psychological conditions that contribute to insomnia. One is Restless Legs Syndrome, another is a sudden panic reaction caused by “missing a step”, the sensation of the foot hitting nothing as you fall and happens upon entering sleep. In the case of the latter the jolt of panic causes hyperventilation and a secretion of adrenalin that will keep a person awake for another hour or two.<br />
<br />
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a medically recognized specific chronic condition common to groups with both genetic and/or acquired factors resulting in the urge to move the limbs around, usually the legs. Sufferers are generally in the over 40 age range but young people can be affected also, and were misdiagnosed in the past. The phenomenon was simply labeled “growing pains” and it was thought that the child would grow out of it. All sorts of hyperactivity can account for young people being awake.<br />
<br />
Other leg cramps occur when a person begins to exercise after being out of shape, when there’s fatigue and dehydration, when medications interfere with the immune system, and when circulatory problems are present. Nerves fire out of control in a chain-reaction within the muscles, which then tighten up with less oxygen carried by the blood. Swimmers in cold water will attest to the possibility of binding cramps getting them in trouble; it’s impossible to put weight on it while in the water and it paralyzes the leg, possibly both legs. <br />
<br />
When a sleeping person gets awakened by leg cramps, jumping up to place weight on the leg will sometimes settle the calf muscles down to ease the pain. They can tie up the muscle area around the shins where standing with weight on the leg won’t help. In that case, a hot bath and massaging the knots out of the muscles is the best first aid. The cramps can start all over as soon as you move the wrong way in bed trying to return to sleep. The aftermath of the pain and the furtive attempts to get rid of it guarantees several hours of lost sleep.<br />
<br />
Doctors may experiment with different medications to treat chronic conditions like RLS but those may conflict with other medications and no one pharmaceutical product is used to treat insomnia with all patients. Psychological conditions causing sleep loss are particularly medicated on a case-by-case basis. Anxiety, stress, schizophrenia, mania, and depression can all lead to long periods of insomnia that are damaging to the patient. When insomnia goes beyond three weeks, it is defined medically as chronic, as opposed to someone having a few days of bad sleep due to jet lag or a short stay in an uncomfortable place such as a hospital.<br />
<br />
Many cases of cramping have vitamins and minerals that can be used, in particular potassium, iron, and a patented supplement that contains all-natural ingredients and is branded as “All Calm” which relieves leg cramps in general and RLS in particular.<br />
<br />
Chronic pain, fatigue, night time angina, acid reflux disease, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, and a wide range of serious conditions will produce insomnia as a side effect, but lower leg muscle difficulty is bound to cause restless nights, and the condition seems to be alleviated universally by the All Calm supplement and so would be the logical place to start when searching for a remedy. Like all treatments it’s wise to get a doctor’s advice and read the instructions regarding method of use.<br />
